Why do poker rooms give bonuses?

In order to entice new players, gambling operations have traditionally given their customers some sort of perk to play. Most regular casinos give free drinks or complimentary dinners and hotel rooms. However, since an online poker room is not going to mail you a steak, they can only really give you cold, hard cash to entice you to play at their site.

Like any other business, casinos must spend money on advertising and publicity. Giving bonuses is an easy and effective way for them to generate good will and earn a positive reputation.

You obviously are not going to get rich because of these bonuses, but they are a nice booster to many people's bankroll and can add up if you play at a wide variety of sites.

Understandably, the casinos don't want people to just take the bonus and leave. They expect you to play a certain amount of raked hands before they will release you the bonus. Generally, this is about ten times the amount of the bonus and varies from site to site. Please check the poker room's site for the latest details.
